WHY BLACK ANVIL EXISTS
JIU-JITSU CHANGED MY LIFE
Black Anvil is my way of paying that forward.
I didn't find Jiu-Jitsu because I had everything figured out. I found it at a time when I needed direction.
It gave me an outlet, a community, and something difficult enough to demand that I change. It taught me to work through discomfort, solve problems under pressure, and respond instead of react.
More than a decade later, those lessons still shape the way I train, teach, and coach.
WHY I STARTED BLACK ANVIL
INSTRUCTION SHOULD HELP YOU UNDERSTAND
Not just memorize more techniques.
I started Black Anvil because I believe Jiu-Jitsu instruction should give people more than a collection of moves.
Too often, students are shown what to do without being taught why it works. Concepts get treated like secrets. The instructor becomes the center of the room instead of the student's development.
I want something different.
Black Anvil is built around complete, honest instruction—understanding the problem, recognizing the principles behind the solution, and learning how to make it work against real resistance.
No secrets held back. No gatekeeping. Just better Jiu-Jitsu.
THE BLACK ANVIL APPROACH
UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM. BUILD THE SOLUTION.
Technique matters. Understanding makes it usable.
My coaching starts with understanding what is actually happening—not simply prescribing another technique.
We identify the problem, understand the position and the decisions available, then build solutions around concepts and techniques that fit the athlete. From there, we test those solutions under appropriate resistance until they can survive live Jiu-Jitsu.
The goal isn't to collect more moves. It's to develop Jiu-Jitsu you understand, can adapt, and can actually use.
Understand → Solve → Practice → Test → Adapt
THE COACH BEHIND BLACK ANVIL
STILL A STUDENT.
ALWAYS A COACH.
The belt matters less than what it took to earn it.
I’m Devin Fields, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Brian Beaury. I received my black belt on June 11, 2022, after more than a decade on the mats.
But Black Anvil isn’t built around a belt or a title.
I’m still studying, experimenting, asking questions, competing, teaching, and looking for better ways to help people understand Jiu-Jitsu.
That work has taken me from regular classes and private coaching to seminars, competition preparation, and building educational resources for practitioners who want more than a collection of techniques.
The goal is simple: keep learning, and give everything I learn back.
THE BLACK ANVIL MINDSET
BUILT UNDER
PRESSURE
Show up. Get tested. Adjust. Keep building.
Pressure doesn’t just test you. It reveals what needs work.
Jiu-Jitsu puts you in situations where things don’t go according to plan. You get uncomfortable. You make mistakes. Your technique fails. Someone finds an answer you weren’t ready for.
That’s where the work begins.
Being Built Under Pressure isn’t about pretending to be tougher than everyone else. It’s about learning to stay present when things get difficult, solve the problem in front of you, make adjustments, and come back better prepared the next time.
That applies on the mats, but it doesn’t end there.
Jiu-Jitsu taught me that growth rarely happens when everything is comfortable. Black Anvil was built around that lesson.
WHAT WE’RE BUILDING
THIS IS JUST
THE BEGINNING.
Education. Coaching. Community. Jiu-Jitsu built to last.
Black Anvil started with a simple idea: share Jiu-Jitsu completely and help people understand what they’re doing, not just memorize what comes next.
Today, that means free education, in-depth instructionals, private and group coaching, competition preparation, and resources designed to help practitioners build better Jiu-Jitsu.
But the vision is bigger than what exists today.
Black Anvil is being built piece by piece—a deeper educational system, a stronger community, and eventually a physical academy where the same approach can live under one roof.
There’s a long way to go.
That’s the point. We keep building.
